Verses 33-40 GROUP_1420 54.33-40
33
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍ بِالنُّذُرِ
The people of Lot rejected Our warnings.
34
إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ نَّجَّيْنَاهُم بِسَحَرٍ
We sent a sandstorm against them which destroyed them all, except the family of Lot, whom We saved at the break of dawn,
35
نِعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا كَذَلِكَ نَجْزِي مَن شَكَرَ
as a blessing from Us: this is how We reward the thankful.
36
وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا بِالنُّذُرِ
Lot warned them of Our punishment, but they disputed the warnings—
37
وَلَقَدْ رَاوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِ فَطَمَسْنَا أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
they even wanted to seduce his guests—but We blinded them, and said, ‘Taste My punishment now that you have scorned My warnings!’—
38
وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ
and early in the morning the punishment decreed overtook them—
39
فَذُوقُوا عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ
‘Taste My punishment now that you have scorned My warnings!’
40
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ
We have made it easy indeed to learn lessons from the Quran. Is there anyone who would receive admonition?

Commentary
(a) When Lot called to the Truth, there were a few individuals who responded positively. They accepted the greatness of Truth and, as compared to it, they conceded that they were small. But many did not concur. Instead of accepting sound arguments in support of Lot’s call, they indulged in false reasoning just in order to reject it. This sort of rejection of the Truth is a major crime. So, while the accepters were spared, the rejecters were seized upon by God. This is an example which shows that, in this world, the fate of the rejecters of the call for Truth is destruction, while those who accept it earn salvation.
